“Friend-zoning” as a concept is such a pile of poop

I’m reclaiming the term for actually friendly purposes

This is some ranting about River Song post Lets Kill Hitler, don’t spoil it for yourself:

Personally, I was disappointed in the choice too, but then I looked at it from a different perspective. Moffat didn’t want the identity of River out, he had even written a false ending to A Good Man Goes to War. In a manner of plot choice would the fact of your friend come up in the middle of a life threatening adventure pop up.

If it would have been mentioned it most likely have been off screen. It may have also been written in the script but had been cut out for editing reasons. A small scene talking about a friend wouldn’t likely be important for plot reasons. It would have been difficult for him to explain why that had to be in the episode with out giving much away.

On the other note if they had Mels pop up in the Wedding episode they would have had to do a casting and auditions and such. They couldn’t just have an extra if she was going to be brought up in another episode. And then the casting and auditions would have most likely caused some suspicion and seemed a bit odd for a small appearance in the wedding.

There is also a mention of her “not being a wedding person.” Which if you think about it, The Silence would have been still tinkering with her. If they had done it on an everyday basis they would have been very thorough with giving her a false sense of self and messing up her memory. They could have very well planted the idea that she didn’t want to go to the wedding to spend time training for the Doctor’s murder.

All in all, Moffat could have done a better job of handling the situation, but he definitely had the idea planned out for a long span of time and thought about setting it up carefully.

Oh crud, and I left the tidbit about River looking into Amy’s bedroom. Well, on that point then. Moffat had stated that River was not surprised but more disappointed. There is no way to look in her head of course, but there can always be theories. With theories there are many. Personally, I like to think of River having chunks of her memory just blank. As she stated (rather nonchalantly though) that she doesn’t quite remember it was all of a bit of blur. With that in mind, she most likely knew Amy knew of the Doctor but doesn’t remember her length of obsession towards it.
